The church of Saint-Léger Guebwiller
The parish church of Romanesque style was built from 1182 to 1235 under the leadership of Father Murbach, replacing a chapel located in the same place. Facade of two towers, the open porch and an octagonal bell tower has been made since the construction of the church. The harmonious architecture of the building and distinguishes it from other Romanesque churches in Alsace whose construction is often left unfinished. Several additions and changes have occurred over the centuries, such as the five-sided apse, or the upper parts of the chorus.
The Collegiate Lautenbach
The former collegiate Saints-Michel-et-Gangolphe has undergone many transformations over the centuries. The nave probably dates from the eleventh century, the transept, choir and the flat bed of the twelfth. Its vaulted porch is one of the most beautiful in the region. The building is however completely restored in 1859. The decorations and additions, such as towers, implemented by the architect of the nineteenth century are questionable although they do not alter the overall aesthetic.
The Hugstein
Towering above the village of Buhl, the castle was founded in the early thirteenth century by Prince-Abbot of the Abbey Murbach: Hugues de Rottenburg. Located in the heart of the Principality Abbey, the main function was to Hugstein defense of the abbey. It controls the Florival, communication axis, and the important town of Guebwiller. Abbe Barthelemy Andlau modernizes Hugstein during the fifteenth century by attaching including a gate-tower decorated with a frieze and a drawbridge.
The Bucheneck
He is quoted since 1251 as well of the bishop of Strasbourg. It serves as home to the bailiffs, officers in charge of administration in the district by the diocese. Occupied by the Industrial Revolution after the castle was bought and restored by the city since 1990. It now houses the museum's collections which illustrate Bucheneck the past Soultz and history of famous families who lived there.
Abbey Murbach
Founded in 728, Abbey Murbach won over the centuries many privileges that allowed him to develop into Alsace and even beyond. The Romanesque abbey church, which remains only the apse and the transept, was built in the twelfth century decor with Lombard and Byzantine influence. In the early eighteenth century the religious began to rebuild the church. The missing funds, the religious took the opportunity to request the transfer of the abbey in Guebwiller. They got their secularization in 1759 and the remains of the abbey was transformed into a parish church.
Dominicans
The order of the Dominicans settled in 1294 in Guebwiller. The church was built between 1312 and 1339 and respects the traditional architecture of the mendicant orders: poverty, lack of bell, arranging places to accommodate the crowd. Thus, the nave resembles a large hall, covered by a cap. It is decorated with remarkable wall paintings dating from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries. In 1791, the order was abolished. Buildings declared national assets are sold and used for filing factory, hospital, laundromat and a market hall. The former convent now houses a hotbed of music: Dominicans in Upper Alsace.Click HERE to see the lineup.
